Octopus Bench

Octopus Bench

It’s a small world full of friends I haven’t met.

A smile and hello could lead to things I never dreamt.

I’ve gotta get out of the house and remove my shell.

Most people are friendly and won’t cast an evil spell.

I sit on my octopus bench and watch my little slice of the world go by.

Why did it take so long to stop, rest and wonder at the sky.

A mother and daughter stride around the light pole.

The red-haired girl takes her pink tailed pooch on a stroll.

A cheese puff from the Peddler and coffee in my hand.

Nothing could make this day better, but a visit with a new friend.

A light breeze blows in and the smell of indian food wafts past my nose.

Store front windows and doors open, including the Compass Rose.

My little village bustles with activity and basks in the sun.

I’ll enjoy this day, relax and smile at everyone.

Discovering Home

Washington State Capital

I have lived in the city of Olympia for nearly 11 years now and I have to admit I barely know this city. My job has required that I travel a large part of the time and when I am off work I tend to either want to stay home and not interface with a bunch of people or I want to get out-of-town on vacation. It hasn’t left much time for me to get out and explore my own city.

So my summer resolution is to really get out there and discover Olympia. I am going to get out the local activities newspaper and check online and do all those things I would do when I go to a new city. I hate to admit this but I have never been to our museum, I have never been to a play or a concert here, I have only been to about a half-dozen of the 100’s of great restaurants here, I have never in 11 years attended Lake Fair(the big town shindig), I haven’t watched the fireworks over the lake on New Years or the 4th of July. I always hear the fireworks when I am home in bed with my dogs, but I’ve never gone to watch. So many other cool things to do here too that I don’t even know about I’m sure.

So in a salute to summer I will begin my discovery of home and will share what I learn and any tips I get from the locals as the summer rolls on.

Do you have a favorite way to discover a new city? If you are a local Olympian, what should I check out first?

Feels Like Home

IMG_0782 I’m home tonight, by home, I mean the place that I grew up. It still feels like home even with all the changes that have taken place over the last 40 odd years.

The place has grown up, like me or maybe out, like me. Lots of sprawl, lots of strip malls, fast food, Starbucks, Costco and all the modern conveniences are here now. We used to have to go to the big city for most of this stuff – either north to Bellingham or south to Seattle/Everett.

The house I lived in as a baby across from the college is now a mexican restaurant, but my grandparents little farm is still pretty close to the same. My highschool has gotten bigger, but some of the berry fields where I earned my first pay checks still grow sweet berries. The local grocery store where we shopped is gone, but “Big Scoop” our local ice cream parlor is still here.

It still feels like home even when I have lived more of my life other places now.  Maybe it is just the concentrated history I have with the place, lots of firsts; first jobs, first kisses, first dates, first drives, first heartbreak, first loss, first loves.

Where do you feel at home?
